Summary: A collection of space outlaws bands together to protect the galaxy from the ultimate threat: Ronan the Accuser and his gem of power.
Set in outer space, Guardians of the Galaxy follows the story of five unlikely criminal heroes: Peter Quill (Christ Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper).
Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill, a human who was abducted from earth and lives in a distant part of the galaxy 26 years later as a Ravager, an outlaw who raids abandoned civilizations for treasure.
After fighting over a very valuable orb, coveted by the evil Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Peter, Gamora, Rocket and Groot are arrested and sent to prison.
While in prison, the four outlaws team up with Drax and create a plan to escape and sell the orb, splitting the profit. Plagued with crises from Ronan and other foes, the team must deviate from their original plan and collaborate to save the galaxy from ruin.
Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely one of the best films of the summer because of its unique character dynamic, fantastic story telling techniques and fun flashback soundtrack that is sure to please.
Chris Pratt shines as Star-Lord/Peter Quill in this film and quickly becomes a character the audience believes in, roots for and smiles at with every snarky comment.
Pratt’s co-stars, Saldana, Bautista, Diesel and Cooper, also do a solid job with their characters, but more importantly are able to work well together to create a team audiences are sure to love.
Groot’s repetition of a single line of dialogue is able to convey a deeper meaning with each utterance and Rocket’s passionate character is not downplayed with his small stature.
While the movie’s run length is fairly long, there were not many slow spots, but rather many action packed sequences and exciting scenarios.
One of the other unique aspects of this movie is its soundtrack, which features many hits of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that make you want to sing along and oddly fit into every situation perfectly.
Another important feature of Guardians of the Galaxy is that it is the first Marvel film to feature a woman in its writing credits, being co-written by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, who is also the director.
The only negative issues with this film were its sometimes elongated action scenes that lingered longer than necessary.
However, what truly made this film magic, and a favorite of mine over the summer, was its ability to fully engage its audience and create an entertaining new world to escape to while at the movies. The film is an impressive origin story and leaves the audience craving more adventure and more Chris Pratt.
I give this movie 4 paws!
