Want to take that girl in your bio class out for a good time but don’t know where to go? Need to unwind after a day full of midterms? Well the seb weekly movie is the perfect place to go. The movie theatre atmosphere, free popcorn (if you get there in time) and the fact that you don’t have to step foot off campus makes this an ideal end of the week date or just a great environment where you can catch a movie and kick off your weekend, and what’s better than a free movie and popcorn? Since we all know that on-campus cable doesn’t come equipped with on demand, this movie series satisfies the need for late night films that we didn’t get the chance to see in theaters.
This week’s movie pick was “Atomic Blonde,” a modern rendition of the James Bond-esque action film complete with a sexy, platinum blonde, bad-ass detective as the main character. The acting was very good and seeing a strong lead female in a big budget movie is always welcome. South African actress Charlize Theron was a perfect fit for this part and after such success in this role, she will almost surely be seen on the big screen again in the near future. Other movies in the seb movie series include “Annabelle: Creation” and “It.” Both are a perfect fit for the spooky Halloween season.
Although seb does a decent job at playing a wide variety of movies, they might consider including indie films in their series. This will allow for more movies with female leads and more diverse casts and could even serve as an opportunity for students to submit their own work to be played on the big screen.
On the same note, another suggestion to improve the weekly movie experience is the addition of a poll to see what movies students on campus really want to see. This would draw a larger crowd, which is a win-win for everyone. Despite there being some room for improvement, the weekly movie series is definitely a hidden gem on the UMBC campus. With a little more advertising, this could really bring more excitement to campus life on the weekends.
Overall, this event was a success. The movie was enjoyable and the atmosphere was perfect. It’s cheaper than going to the theater without sacrificing quality. Grab some snacks and a blanket and head over to Lecture Hall 1 for seb’s weekly movie series. You won’t be disappointed! Events can be found on the myUMBC calendar under Events on the homepage.
