Snow clear-up
Officials throughout Maryland are still gauging the effects of historic snowstorm Jonas. As of Tuesday, Jan. 26, city officials still had no official estimate of how much of the city’s roadways had been cleared of snow or how long it might take for the city to be completely cleared. Governor Larry Hogan announced that Maryland would apply for disaster relief from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in light of damages throughout the state. In the meantime, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake urged residents to remain indoors and avoid traveling on roads.
Free lunches for city students
Although Baltimore city schools are closed due to the snowstorm, students can still receive free bagged lunches today. Jonathan Rondeau, president of the Family League, stated that lunches will be handed out at a dozen site locations throughout Baltimore. “We know families don’t always have resources to make sure every child has access to food,” Rondeau said in a statement to The Baltimore Sun. Residents can call United Way’s 211 hotline or the city’s 311 non-emergency line to learn the exact locations.
Hrabowski, AOL co-founder to speak at innovation conference
The Baltimore Business Journal announced that AOL co-founder Steve Case and UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski will be among several entrepreneurs and leaders to speak at Light City Baltimore, Baltimore’s first light installation festival and innovation conference. The seven-day festival is scheduled for March 28 to April 3, and will feature various artists and musical performances. The event will also try to help tourism-driven business rebound in the wake of last year’s civil unrest. Guest speakers like Case and Hrabowski will take part in talks regarding innovation in health, social works, sustainability and the arts.
